Artificial Intelligence? More Like Adopting Ignorance
*Guy Who Sucks At Being A Person Sees Huge Potential In AI
For this week's blog post, we're mixing it up a little. Instead of sharing my opinions that literally nobody asked for (but you all got anyway), I'm instead going to analyze a piece criticizing the use of AI. Before we begin, I just want to mention that I'm actually in full support of the mocking of AI. The concept itself is very creepy, as depending on some robot for everything seems like the epitome of society moving backwards instead of forwards. Imagine not being able to think for yourself, especially in the world that we live in today.
The article begins by immediately making fun of the subject of the post with a sardonic tone, The Onion delves into direct quotes from the man, James Parker. In the title, they don't mention his name, and I felt that this relates to the idea that everyone who will learn to depend on AI will soon just become a nameless, faceless person who will never provide the world with anything useful, just like Parker. The piece also adds a photo of James, who looks at the camera with dead eyes and no smile. *Photo from the actual article*
As you can see, there's no emotion that can be detected on this guy's face, almost as if there's nothing going on in his brain. The article most likely made the photo this way to display the scariness in letting AI take hold over our lives, as if we assume Parker completely depends on AI (which is implied in the text), then he came to be this way because of his dependency. And anyone who does the same will be a shell of the person they could be.

Overall, the article makes fun of those who see Artificial Intelligence as a positive contribution to society, as it really isn't. All it really does is encourage laziness and a dependance that shouldn't be put onto a machine that can't even be accessed in emergencies that they could actually have use in - i.e. natural disasters that cause power-outages, and even then, are they really still necessary? (I'll give you a hint: it isn't yes). The fact is, AI doesn't work to help society; it works to weaken it, and if people feed into AI and allow it to completely control their lives, they'll end up just like my guy James over here (with all respect).
I like how you connected the onions claim that people who depend on AI will become nameless by tying it back to the subject of the article being nameless as well.
ReplyDeleteI liked your take on AI and how it creates a society of similar people. This makes us all mindless "James Parkers" who are too lazy to do real work and more interested in having AI do it.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you analyzed the article and also described your own opinion in the blog. Additionally, your analysis of the article's topic was pretty interesting as well.
ReplyDeleteI like how you said AI doesn't help society, it weakens it, and how you connected it to the mindless "James Parker."
